Historic architecture in England

National Trust - Nostell, often simply known as Nostell Priory, is an impressive estate near Wakefield in England that captivates visitors with its combination of historical architecture, exquisite interior design, and extensive parkland. This 18th-century mansion, managed by the National Trust, is a outstanding example of Georgian architecture and provides a deep insight into the lives of the English upper class of the past. Originally built as the family home of the Winns, Nostell Priory reflects the wealth and taste of this influential family and is now a popular destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Georgian architecture and interior design

The mansion itself is an architectural gem, designed by James Paine and later refined with interiors by Robert Adam, two of the most prominent architects of their time. The facade of light yellow sandstone exudes elegance and symmetry, while the interiors impress with intricate plasterwork, elaborate ceilings, and classical details. Particularly notable is the collection of furniture specially made for Nostell by Thomas Chippendale. The famous furniture designer, who was born nearby, has left some of his finest works here, including intricately decorated cabinets, chairs, and tables that showcase the pinnacle of British craftsmanship. Rooms like the library, dining room, and drawing room are lavishly furnished, evoking a sense of luxury and sophistication that transports visitors back to the 18th century.

Harmoniously blending nature and architecture

The surrounding park is equally impressive and was partially designed by Capability Brown, one of England's most influential landscape architects. The expansive green spaces include gentle hills, ancient trees, and several lakes, creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. Paths wind through the park, offering views of the mansion and hidden garden areas like the kitchen garden or rose garden, which are lovingly maintained. The Obelisk Lake, a focal point in the park, invites visitors to linger and is a popular spot for birdwatching, as the grounds are home to a variety of birds and wildlife. The park is not only a place of beauty, but also a testament to the modern concept of harmoniously blending nature and architecture.

Nostell Priory seasonal events

In addition to the mansion and park, there are other highlights on the estate. The stables and outbuildings showcase how the property was traditionally managed, providing an exciting contrast to the luxurious life in the main house. A small church, St. Michael's Chapel, adds a spiritual dimension to the site and is a beautiful example of medieval architecture linked to the estate's later history. For families, there are adventure areas and playgrounds that invite children to actively explore the surroundings, while adults can enjoy the tranquility or the historical details.

Parkland with ancient trees

An on-site café offers a selection of food and drinks, often made with locally sourced ingredients or directly from the estate's kitchen garden. This makes a break particularly enjoyable and connects visitors with the local culture. Nostell Priory is also known for its seasonal events, such as Easter or Christmas celebrations, which bring the estate to life and make it a place that has something to offer in every season.

Lovely place to visit. Have an enclosed space where dogs can roam free. Large grounds so even when busy the dogs have space to roam. Lovely trails and wood area perfect for children. Has toilets, cafe and sells books. Perfect for a Sunday walk. Only downside is parking is £5 but that's for non members

This house is interesting and does give you a feel of how it evolved over time. There are 2 floors open to the public showcasing some chippendale furniture and some ornate ceilings. The staff were all very nice and some did try to involve the children [ 2yrs and 6 yrs]. However I wouldn't particularly recommend for young children as there wasn't much for them in the house. The children enjoyed the gardens and the play area and these were both great. There are benches and a picnic area in the grounds and there is also a shop and cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. A nice touch was the back packs and small toys for children to borrow whilst at Nostell e.g bug viewers, feely toys and fidget toys.

Beautiful grounds. The spring bulbs had started to flower so there were some beautiful floral woodland displays. The playground was excellent. Spread out which was great and the kids (and adults) loved it haha! The food from the cafe was amazing too. Nice little gift shop and plants also available to purchase. There were some secondhand book sales as well when we visited. Definitely will be returning in summer to see the rose garden in bloom.

Not a lot here to see or do once you've seen the house, but the staff, as usual with NT are so helpful and friendly and caring. Food in restaurant slightly above average.

Lovely place, although it being sunny might have helped. It would have got five stars, but the WCs are half a kilometre from the car park.

A great place to take a walk on a cool, crisp morning where the first signs of spring are visible with snowdrops pushing through the undergrowth in the woods surrounding the main house.

Great NT site Area is extensive with beautiful house, gardens, lake and parkland, and all you'd expect from NT properties e.g. cafe and shop. Car park is chargeable for non members and walk is 500m to the house and facilities. I think they have parking for people with disabilities nearer and I also saw a shuttle bus but didn't use it Kitchen garden was off limits due to the condition of the grass which was disappointing as this is always a highlight for me. Volunteers in the house were really knowledgeable and welcoming and I plan to return when I have more time, summer time would also be great when roses are in bloom

Alwsys check the website, and even then you can be fooled as its not regularly updated it seems. The slightest hint of wind, even if its only mentioned on the forcast, and the gates will be closed and the staff will hide. Im sure its for our own safety of ccourse, in their minds, as most adults cant judge a hazardous situation obviously. Cant see me renewing the membership next year.

Lovely experience I wish the lighting in the house was brighter but understood why this couldn't be! Also more guides in the house would have been good. Also a map of the total area would have been good 👍
